10 Things to Look For in a Wrap

Any experienced RYO enthusiast knows that not all wraps are created equally. The industry has grown so much in recent years that these days, the connoisseur can choose from a massive selection of wraps in different sizes, materials, flavors and levels of quality. Because The Calm Leaf want each customer to find the ultimate wrap for their most specific needs, we offer a great variety of wrap options that have something for everyone.

So, what should you be looking for in a good, reliable wrap for your herbal needs?

#1: Size

First off, you’ll want to consider the size of the wrap. There are different sizes out there based on how much smoke a person wants to get out a single wrap. Some companies go by capacity – in other words, their wraps can fit .25 to 1 full gram of herb – and others go by millimeter, telling you how long and wide the wrap will be when it’s completely filled. Ask yourself how much you can smoke in one or two sessions, and then choose your size accordingly.

#2: Material

Also, consider the material. A lot of wraps on the market come from tobacco leaves, which contain small amounts of nicotine that do add to the effect of the herb itself. You may or may not want to be inhaling tobacco along with your herb, and if you don’t want that, you can find other choices like hemp leaves and so on.

#3: Durability

Obviously, you want a wrap that won’t tear or dry out so quickly that it starts cracking before you get a chance to smoke it. Durability is hard to measure, but we can say that cheaper brands use materials that are more prone to ripping, as well as wraps that are so thin that they struggle to be fully filled without tearing on the sides.

#4: Reviews

It always helps to read reviews before investing in a wrap. That’s because the reviews will tell you if there’s something not to like about a certain product – i.e., it burns too fast, it has a bad flavor or it rips easily. And, you’ll also discover whether or not a certain wrap is highly rated compared to the rest.

#5: Price

Obviously, price is a factor as well. The heavier of a smoker you are, the more frequently you’ll be stocking up on wraps. So, you don’t want to necessarily blow a huge chunk of your monthly budget on wraps alone. Consider the price, not only to make sure that you’re not overspending, but also to see which wraps may be priced so low that it must imply a low-quality product. A wrap that is far cheaper than the rest may be made from low-quality synthetic materials that are best to be avoided altogether.

#6: Quantity

Pay attention to how many wraps you’re actually getting with a single purchase. Many comes in packs of several. This matters for two reasons. One is that the more wraps are in each pack, the less frequently you’ll have to restock. Secondly, if two packs of wraps are available at the same price, but one gives you five and one gives you two, you’ll want to consider why the same price gives you two different quantities.

#7: Flavor

Not all wraps are flavored, but many are. Look at the flavor of a wrap before making a purchase, because you might find that a certain flavor is not appealing to you at all, which will leave you disappointed with your smoke. Look for a flavor that does appeal to your palate, or if you’re not into flavor, go with a “natural” option that has not been infused with any flavoring ingredients.

#8: Whether or Not It’s All-Natural/Untreated

Ideally, you should only buy all-natural wraps, meaning that they’re made with natural fibers, and are not treated with chemicals like bleach or preservatives. After all, you’re inhaling whatever is in that wrap, and you don’t want to be breathing in a bunch of questionable chemicals.

#9: Whether or Not They’re Filtered

Most wraps are filtered, but some aren’t. A filter helps diffuse the smoke, making it less harsh on the inhale, taking away a little of the potency in the process. Consider whether or not you want a filtered wrap, and then simply buy accordingly.

#10: Burn Rate

Most manufacturers will tell you that their wraps burn slowly, and that’s exactly what you want. A fiber that burns too fast will burn before your herb, meaning you’re not getting as many hits of herb as you think you are.
