Organic vs. Non-Organic Wraps
When shopping for the perfect wrap, we look at things like how much herb it can fit, its flavor and what it’s made out of. But, there’s something else that we should be paying attention to, which is whether or not the wrap is organic.
As you’re about to see, organic wraps are, in general, a better choice. Not all wraps are organic, and using a non-organic wrap isn’t the end of the world, but if you can make the choice, we do recommend it.
What Makes a Wrap Organic?
The large majority of wraps on the market are made from natural materials – tobacco leaf, hemp leaf, corn husk fibers, etc. Natural is always a better choice, because unnatural, synthetic fibers can be made from all kinds of chemicals that are not great to inhale into the lungs on a regular basis.
But, even natural fibers can contain chemicals that are hidden from our sight. That’s because some wrap materials are grown “conventionally”, aka non-organically, and this means that they’re grown with the help of synthetic materials like pesticides, herbicides and fertilizers that contain all kinds of chemicals. The problem is that these chemicals inevitably end up making up a portion of the end product, and so we’re still inhaling questionable materials into the body when we use them.
For a wrap to be classified as organic, it must be certified as such by the USDA. And, to be certified, the wrap material must be grown on a farm that has not been treated with any synthetic growing chemicals for at least 3 years. To confirm this, a sample of the soil is taken and tested to show that it has no trace of anything synthetic. Then, the farm must maintain its use of only natural growing methods to maintain its USDA organic status.
Is Organic Always Better with Wraps?
It’s pretty much undeniable that organic is better. And, this doesn’t just apply to wraps. It applies to the herb we put into the wraps, as well as the food we eat, the products we apply to our bodies, and more. Over the years, farmers have expanded upon their use of chemical growing agents since they do benefit the farmer themselves. Chemical growing agents are cheaper to produce, and therefore bring down farming overhead. And, these agents can lead to better, more predictable yields and a lower risk of disease and infestation, which in theory is a good thing, but comes at a cost since again, it exposes the consumers’ bodies to chemicals that may do harm in the long run. For example, many pesticides contain toxins and carcinogens that build up in the body over time, leading to the potential for ill health.
Are There Any Drawbacks to Organic Wraps?
While ultimately, organic is the better choice, some people may choose to refrain from them. The main reason is cost. Like we said, non-organic growing methods are cheaper for farmers, and what this means is that it costs more to grow organic materials. As a result, organic wraps tend to be a little more expensive, and that might matter enough to a consumer depending on their budget. So, if you are on a very tight budget, organic wraps may not actually be the choice you end up making.
In Most Cases, Organic is the Way to Go!
At the end of the day, it’s hard to argue with the fact that organic equals better. At The Calm Leaf carries plenty of organic wraps that are natural, untreated, non-GMO and grown organically to be as clean for your body as possible, the way that you deserve.
