Vaporizers 101

Vaping has become the top method to consume cannabinoids ever since the technology first hit the scene over a decade ago. Since then, vaping technology has gotten phenomenally advanced, being more portable and user-friendly yet rich in features than ever before. Vaporizers, often referred to as "vapes," are devices used to inhale the active ingredients of plant material, most commonly cannabis, oils, and herbs.

What are the Different Types of Vaporizers?

There are several types of vaporizers, and they work by heating the material to a temperature that is high enough to vaporize the active compounds, but lower than the point of combustion. This process releases the active substances in the form of vapor, which is then inhaled by the user. The main types of vaporizers include:

  • Herbal Portable Vaporizers: These are small, handheld devices designed for convenience and mobility. They are battery-powered and can be used with a variety of materials, including dry herbs and concentrates.
  • Desktop Vaporizers: Larger and more powerful than portable models, desktop vaporizers are designed for home use. They often offer more precise temperature control and efficient vapor production.
  • Concentrate Portable Vaporizers: Also known as vape pens, these are small, discreet devices that resemble a pen. They are typically used with concentrates like oils and waxes.
  • E-Nails/E-Rigs: They combine the functionality of traditional dab rigs with the impressive technology behind advanced vaping systems to give you the best of both worlds. The biggest advantage is that they automatically heat your nail for you with maximum precision so that you don’t have to rely on a butane torch.

How Exactly are Herbal Portable Vaporizers Used?

Vaporizers are devices used to inhale the active ingredients of plant material, typically cannabis, shisha, or other herbs or blends. The process involves heating the material to a temperature that vaporizes the active compounds without causing the material to combust. This results in sensational vapor, which’s less harsh than smoke.

Here's a general guide on how to use a vaporizer:

  1. Grind the Material: Most vaporizers work best with finely ground material. This increases the surface area and allows the heat to be distributed more evenly.
  2. Fill the Chamber: Open the vaporizer and fill the chamber with the ground material. Don't overpack, as this can restrict airflow.
  3. Heat the Vaporizer: Turn on the vaporizer and select the desired temperature. Vaporizers often have a range of temperature settings to control the intensity and flavor of the vapor.
  4. Wait for the Vaporizer to Heat Up: Many vaporizers will indicate when they've reached the set temperature. This can take anywhere from a few seconds to a minute.
  5. Inhale the Vapor: Once the vaporizer is heated, you can begin to inhale the vapor. Inhaling should be slow and steady.
  6. Adjust Temperature as Needed: Depending on your preference and the vaporizer, you may need to adjust the temperature during use to get the best experience.
  7. Clean After Use: It's important to clean the vaporizer after use to ensure its longevity and optimal performance. This usually involves removing any leftover material and cleaning the chamber with a brush or cloth.

Note: The effectiveness and experience can vary based on the type of vaporizer, the material used, and personal preferences. Always refer to the user manual of your specific vaporizer for the best practices and safety guidelines.

How are Desktop Vaporizers Used?

Desktop vaporizers are a popular way to consume herbs and concentrates, offering a variety of features and styles. Here's a general guide on how they are used:

Preparation of the Material:

For dry herbs: Grind the herbs to a medium-fine consistency. This increases the surface area, allowing for more efficient vaporization.

For concentrates: Use a small amount, as they are typically more potent than dry herbs.

Filling the Vaporizer:

Fill the heating chamber with your prepared material.

Avoid overpacking, as this can restrict airflow and reduce the efficiency of vaporization.

Setting the Temperature:

Most desktop vaporizers allow you to set a specific temperature.

The ideal temperature depends on the material being vaporized. Generally, temperatures between 355°F and 385°F (180°C and 195°C) work well for dry herbs, while concentrates may require higher temperatures.

Heating Up:

Turn on the vaporizer and allow it to heat up.

Some models have a light or display to indicate when the set temperature is reached.

Inhalation:

Once the vaporizer is ready, you can start inhaling the vapor. Desktop vaporizers often come with a whip (a long tube) or a balloon bag attachment for inhalation.

Inhale slowly and deeply to ensure the vapor is drawn efficiently.

Enjoying the Session:

The material can usually be vaporized over several minutes.

You can take breaks between pulls, as desktop vaporizers are designed to maintain temperature over a session.

After Use:

Turn off the vaporizer and allow it to cool down.

Clean the chamber and any other parts that come into contact with the vapor or material. Regular cleaning is important for optimal performance and hygiene.

Safety Precautions:

Always use the vaporizer according to the manufacturer’s instructions.

Be mindful of the hot surfaces and parts.

Note: The effectiveness and experience can vary based on the vaporizer model, the quality of the material, and individual preferences. It's important to experiment with different temperatures and techniques to find what works best for you.

How Exactly are Concentrate Portable Vaporizers Used?

Using an oil or wax vape pen involves several steps depending upon the device being used. So, we will break down both here. Remember, these are general guidelines. You should always refer to the specific instructions for your vape pen model, as different models may have different features and requirements.

For Oil Vape Pens:

  1. Charge the Pen: Make sure your vape pen is fully charged before use.
  2. Fill the Cartridge: If your pen isn't pre-filled, you'll need to fill the cartridge with your vape oil. Be careful not to overfill.
  3. Attach the Cartridge: Screw the cartridge onto the pen. Ensure it's properly connected.
  4. Turn On the Pen: This usually involves pressing the power button five times. Some pens automatically heat up when you inhale, while others require you to hold the button while inhaling.
  5. Select the Temperature (if applicable): Some pens allow you to adjust the temperature. Higher temperatures produce more vapor, while lower temperatures produce less intense vapor.
  6. Inhale: Take a small puff and wait a few minutes to gauge the effects before taking more.
  7. Turn Off the Pen: Press the power button five times to turn off the pen.
  8. Clean and Store: Regularly clean the mouthpiece and store the pen in a cool, dry place.

For Wax Vape Pens:

  1. Charge the Pen: Ensure the pen is fully charged.
  2. Load the Wax: Use a dab tool to place a small amount of wax onto the coil. Avoid overloading to prevent clogging.
  3. Assemble the Pen: Reattach the mouthpiece and any other parts you removed.
  4. Turn On the Pen: Usually by pressing the power button five times.
  5. Select the Temperature (if applicable).

  8. Turn Off and Clean: Turn off the pen and clean any residue with a cotton swab.

How Exactly are E-Nails/E-Rigs Used?

E-nails (electronic nails) and e-rigs are devices used for vaporizing cannabis concentrates, commonly used in the context of dabbing. Again, they provide a better controlled and often more convenient way to consume cannabis concentrates compared to traditional methods like torch-and-nail setups.

E-Nails:

  1. Setup: An e-nail usually consists of a controller box that delivers heat through a coil which is connected to the nail itself. T he nail is usually made of materials like titanium, quartz, or ceramic.
  2. Temperature Control: The user sets a desired temperature on the controller box. E-nails allow for precise temperature control, which is crucial for dabbing, as different temperatures can affect the flavor and efficiency of the vaporization.
  3. Heating: Once the desired temperature is set, the coil heats the nail to the set temperature. The user waits for the nail to reach the correct temperature.
  4. Dabbing: With the nail heated, the user then places a small amount of cannabis concentrate onto the nail using a dab tool. The concentrate instantly vaporizes upon contact.
  5. Inhalation: The user inhales the vapor through a dab rig, which’s similar to a bong.

E-Rigs:

  1. All-in-One Design: E-rigs are more compact and often come as a single, integrated unit combining the heating element, battery, and water filtration system.
  2. Operation: To use an e-rig, the user typically fills a small water chamber, powers on the device, and then selects the desired temperature setting.
  3. Heating: The e-rig heats up to the selected temperature. Many e-rigs have haptic feedback (vibration) or a light indicator to signal when they're ready.
  4. Loading the Concentrate: Once the device is ready, the user places the cannabis concentrate into the heating chamber using a dab tool.
  5. Inhalation: The user then inhales the vapor produced through a mouthpiece.

Safety and Tips

  • Temperature: For both devices, lower temperatures usually produce more flavorful vapor, while higher temperatures produce a more intense effect.
  • Maintenance: Regular cleaning of the nail, heating element, and water chamber (if applicable) is important to ensure optimal performance and hygiene.
  • Usage: Start with small amounts of concentrate, in order to understand the potency and effects.
  • Safety: Always handle the devices with care, especially when they are hot.

What are 510-Threaded Vaporizer Batters?

The term "510-threaded" in the context of vaporizer batteries refers to a specific type of thread design used in the connection between the battery and the vaporizer cartridge. Essentially, they are a standard and widely-used component in the vaping world, known for their compatibility, variety, and user-friendliness.

Below are some key points about them:

  1. Universal Compatibility: The 510 threading is a standard in the vaping industry, particularly for e-cigarettes and vape pens. This threading ensures compatibility between a wide range of batteries and cartridges.
  2. Thread Design: The "510" designation refers to the thread pattern – 10 threads at 0.5 mm each. This standardized sizing allows for cross-compatibility between different brands and types of cartridges and batteries.
  3. Widespread Use: 510-threaded batteries are among the most common types found in the vaping market. This universality has made them the go-to choice for many manufacturers and users.
  4. Variety of Batteries: The batteries themselves come in various capacities, sizes, and designs. Some have adjustable voltage settings for temperature control, while others are simple, straightforward designs with a single voltage setting.

  8. Rechargeable: Most of these batteries are rechargeable, typically via a USB charger, providing convenience and cost-effectiveness over time.

Conduction Method vs. Convection Method For Vaping

Conduction and convection are two different methods used in vaporizers for heating materials like herbs or concentrates. They fundamentally differ in how they transfer heat to the material being vaporized.

Method #1: Conduction Vaping:

In conduction vaping, the material comes into direct contact with the heating element.

The heat is transferred directly from the surface of the heater to the material.

This method is similar to cooking on a stovetop where the pan heats up and cooks the food through direct contact.

One of the challenges with conduction vaping is the risk of uneven heating or burning of the material, as it requires periodic stirring or shaking to ensure even vaporization.

Method #2: Convection Vaping:

Convection vaping uses hot air to heat the material.

The heating element warms the air, which then passes through the material, heating it indirectly.

This is akin to a convection oven where hot air circulates around the food to cook it evenly.

Convection vaporizers typically provide a more even heat distribution, reducing the risk of burning the material and often resulting in a more efficient extraction of the active ingredients.

Pros & Cons

Each method has its pros & cons, however, these can vary based on personal experience with that said vaping style:

  • Conduction vaporizers tend to heat up faster and are usually simpler and less expensive. However, they might require more technique to avoid combustion.
  • Convection vaporizers, on the other hand, are often more efficient and provide a smoother and more consistent vapor but can be more expensive and may take longer to reach the desired temperature.
